Southington's Fire Department Has A New Leader

The Southington Board of Fire Commissioners unanimously made the appointment Thursday evening.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Southington Fire Department has a new leader and he is a very familiar face.

The Southington Board of Fire Commissioners Thursday evening unanimously appointed Eric Heath to be the department's new chief, effective on Friday, Sept. 16.

It was announced via Facebook late Friday morning.

"Congratulations to Eric Heath who was appointed as the Fire Chief of the Southington Fire Department at last night’s Board of Fire Commissioners meeting," wrote the department.

Heath takes over following the recent retirement of former Southington Fire Department Chief James Paul officially called it a career Sept. 10 after more than 29 years in firefighting.

Heath has served the town since 1999 and he assumed numerous roles within the department.

He most recently was appointed to be interim fire chief following Paul's retirement. The "interim" label was removed Thursday evening.

"His expertise in grant writing and knowledge of fire apparatus and equipment has greatly progressed the safety and operations of SFD," wrote the department when he was named interim chief earlier this month. "His commitment of public service to the town is passionate and unwavering."
