Southington Sewer Plant Upgrade Likely Either Way Referendum Goes

New state and federal regulations require better filtering of phosphorous.

There will potentially have to be upgrades to the town’s wastewater treatment plant either way a referendum goes next year.

Southington would have to pay about $31 million for upgrades and the state would chip in $15 million for upgrades at the plant, according to the Record-Journal.

New equipment would filter more phosphourus from water, which is required under new state and federal regulations. If voters decided against funding the project there would still have to be upgrades to stay in compliance and the town would risk losing the $15 million.
