Southington's Fire Chief Shaves Head For A Very Good Cause

He recently sported a shiny dome to support the St. Baldrick's Foundation event funding childhood cancer research.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — While many men Southington Fire Department Chief Scott Lee's age don't need a razor to induce baldness, Lee is fortunate enough to require such a device.

And, last week, he put a razor to good use for a good cause.

The SFD is rallying community support for a fundraiser last week benefiting the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a leading charity dedicated to funding childhood cancer research.

Lee announced he participated in the foundation’s signature head-shaving event, part of a nationwide effort to raise money for research into pediatric cancer treatments and cures.

“I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: SFD,” Lee said on his St. Baldrick's Foundation webpage. “Why am I shaving my head, and why should you care?”

Lee described the fundraiser as part of a broader movement that began as a challenge among friends and has since grown into a large-scale volunteer initiative.

“This year, I’m joining thousands of others to shave my head to raise money for childhood cancer research,” he said.

The foundation, established in 2000, has raised more than $300 million to support research grants.

It is known for its volunteer-driven events, particularly head-shaving fundraisers aimed at increasing awareness and donations.

Lee emphasized the stakes of the cause, citing survival and long-term health challenges faced by children diagnosed with cancer.

“Did you know, 1 in 5 kids diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. won’t survive?” he said. “For those who do, more than 96% have severe or life-threatening conditions by the time they are 50.”

He called on residents to contribute, highlighting the impact of community involvement.

“Each shaved head, every dollar donated, creates a ripple effect of progress for kids with cancer,” Lee said.

The department encouraged residents to support the effort, noting that donations will help fund research nationwide through the foundation’s grant programs.

“Together, let’s give these kids the lifetime they deserve,” Lee said. “Thank you for your support.”
