See What Southington's Newest Band Has To Offer At Special Concert

The 'Southington Symphonic Band' Monday is hosting a special 'Summer Celebration' concert at Southington High School.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — There's a new band in town and on Monday, July 3, folks can enjoy a special performance at Southington High School to see what its about.

The name of the band is the "Southington Symphonic Band"and the conductor is retired music educator Jeff Shaw of Southington.

And on Monday, the band will host another community concert at 7 p.m. at Southington High School, 720 Pleasant St.

The band made its debut in April with a show at SHS and Monday's second concert will be the band's "Summer Celebration" event.

As was the case in April, the show is free, but donations are being accepted to help grow the band and expand its community offerings.

Featured works on the playlist that night, according to concert promotional material, are "The Don Quixote Suite" by Robert Smith; "Arabesque" by Samuel R. Hazo; and "Casey at the Bat" by Randol Alan Bass.

Of course that last work ties into Shaw's unique background as, not only is he a music educator, but he's also a baseball coach as well.

In addition to being the former band director at Southington High School, Shaw is also the former band director at Plainfield High School in eastern Connecticut and he hails from Windham and went to the University of Connecticut.
