Theories Abound About Southington's Big Bang

SOUTHINGTON, CT, — Police said they have received no solid leads about the mysterious bang heard around the town on Monday, but social media theorists have been having a field day with the possibilities.

Among the theories on the Southington Police Department Facebook page are:

• "Aliens."
• "The gates of hell opening."
• "A witness at the Little Red Store on Marion Street said she heard it and it sounded like it came from behind the store to the south."
• "A truck explosion of some kind?"
• "Sound Barrier being broke by either some yahoo in a jet or something came into the atmosphere that broke it."
• "Sound Barrier being broke[n] by either some yahoo in a jet or something [that] came into the atmosphere that broke it."
• "A crash on I-84."

On Monday at about 10:30 a.m., the Southington Police Department received multiple calls
reporting a loud explosion, police said.

The reports were from the center of Southington extending to the Wolcott and Cheshire town lines, police said.

A majority of the calls appeared to be concentrated in the Southwest portion of town, police said.

In all, police received between 30 and 40 calls at the time. The Southington Police Dept. and Southington Fire Department sent units to investigate and were unable to locate the origin of the explosion, police said.

There were no calls of power outages, property damage or calls of smoke in Southington associated with the explosion, police said. Police checked with surrounding towns (Cheshire, Wolcott and Waterbury) and all reported receiving complaints of a similar sound and they also reported not finding the cause of the explosion, police said.

Dispatchers also contacted local energy companies who reported no incidents that would have caused the explosion.

No solid leads have been developed and the investigation has stalled, police said on Tuesday.
