Tractor Trailer Wreck Closes Part Of Southington Highway: Update

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A tractor trailer and a motor vehicle have collided on Interstate 84 in Southington Wednesday morning, initially resulting in the closure of a rest area on the highway.

The situation has caused traffic issues for much of the day, with two lanes of the highway still closed into early afternoon.

According to the state Department of Transportation, the crash happened on I-84 east near the Southington Rest Area between exits 28 and 30.

As a result, the rest area was closed, but it has, since, been reopened, according to state officials.

The accident was first reported at 10:06 a.m. and it is "unknown" when it will be cleared.

During an 11:18 a.m. update, it was reported that, now, the right lane of the highway is closed in that area.

At a 12:35 p.m. update, it was reported by the DOT that traffic was backed up 3.2 miles in that area, with the right and center lanes still closed.

According to a 2:05 p.m. DOT update, just the right shoulder was closed at the scene, though traffic was backed up 3.6 miles.

Connecticut State Police said via Twitter that they are investigating the accident, warning motorists in the process.

"Please use extra caution while traveling through the area," wrote the CSP.
