Two Educators Mourned By Southington School Board

Both teachers retired from the Southington School System after long careers in education and died just a few days apart.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The local school board last week paid tribute to the memories of two longtime Southington School System educators who died last month.

Led by Southington Boad of Education Chairperson Colleen Clark, board members Aug. 17 a had moment of silence for both of them, who retired after teaching several years in Southington.

Patricia Langdon, who died July 13. She taught health in the Southington Public School system from 1982 until 1999.

Langdon, who was 80 upon her passing, took an indirect route to education, as she graduated from nursing school in 1964, embarking on a long career of hospital nursing and raising a family with her husband.

Then, in 1982, while in her late 30s, she earned her bachelor's degree and began working in the Southington School System as a health coordinator and teacher.

She went on to earn graduate degrees into her 40s and, eventurally retired in 1999.

Jeanne Schumann, who died on July 17. Schumann was a former science teacher and guidance counselor in the Southington school system from 1975 until retiring in 2002

Schumann was 79 upon her passing (days shy of her 80th birthday), graduated from Southington High School in 1961 and St. Joseph’s College in Maryland with a B.A. in Science in 1965.

In 1968, she earned a master's degree in education and guidance from Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

After graduating college, Schumann worked in the Southington School System for 36 years, including time as a science teacher at Southington High School, finishing up as a guidance counselor at Kennedy and Depaolo middle schools.

She received a kidney transplant in 2002, according to her obituary, allowing her to enjoy a 20-plus year retirement.
