UPDATE: Black Bear Spotted in South Windsor

The bear was also spotted in a backyard in East Windsor. See the video here.

Update, 9:30 p.m.

South Windsor police updated Thursday night that they believe the black bear spotted earlier in the day has found its way to the Connecticut River area.

Police said Animal Control Officer Brian Kelley took several photos this evening as he monitored the animal’s movements. The meadows area between Main St and the river offers hundreds of acres for this animal to roam, it likely walked down from East Windsor today, police said.

Original story

South Windsor Police received a call earlier today from a resident of Wentworth Drive, in the Northwest corner of town, to report that a black bear was eating out of his bird feeder.

Officers were dispatched to check the area and police said there is no indication the animal is sick, injured or aggressive.

“These are wild animals and should be treated as such, we have no plans to trap or relocate the animal should we see it,” the department posted on its Facebook page.

Also on Thursday morning, East Windsor Police reported a black bear, presumably the same one, was observed in the backyard at 25 Plantation Road and it took down a bird feeder before heading toward South Windsor.

The Connecticut DEP offers the following information:

If you see a bear:

  • Enjoy it from a distance.
  • Advertise your presence by shouting and waving your arms or walk slowly away.
  • Never attempt to feed or attract bears.
  • Report bear sightings to the Wildlife Division, at (860) 675-8130.
