Computer Science Honor Society at ECSU

A cohort of gifted computer science students at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) honor society in April. Among the inductees was Ryan Taylor of South Windsor, who majors in Computer Science.

The mission of UPE is to recognize academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the computing and information disciplines. UPE is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, and has received endorsements from the two largest computer organizations in the world, the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society. UPE is also a charter member of The International Federation of Engineering Education Societies.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Cassandra Bay of South Windsor was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Bay is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education at Westfield State University.

Bay is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Society has chapters on more than 300 college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

Academic All-Conference honors

Daniel Bettigole of South Windsor was named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Bettigole has earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale after the 2015 fall semester, achieved second year academic status, and been a member of a spring varsity team for the entire season.

Delta Mu Delta honoree

On April 19, Eastern Connecticut State University inducted select students into the Delta Omega chapter of Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society for business administration and related disciplines. Cory Derohanian of South Windsor, a Business Administration and Accounting major, was one of the inductees.

This society recognizes outstanding students in Business Administration, Accounting and Business Information Systems. Membership in Delta Mu Delta is an honor indicative of earnest, intelligent purpose and rewarding achievement, the goals of the honor society.

Economics major presents research project at national conference

Ten Eastern Connecticut State University students presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Asheville, NC, from April 7-9. The conference was established in 1987 and is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity in all field of study.

Ian Peters of South Windsor was one of the attendees. Peters's major is Economics. Peters's research project was titled "It's All Very Taxing: Interstate Tax Competition and the Balanced Budget."

"The librarians suggested I contact other states to see if they had a similar tabulation of tax rates, and after emailing six different states, Washington State had exactly what I needed -- each state's corporate tax rate going back to 1980," said Peters.

Augustine Scholarship at Assumption

Assumption College honored 68 students with awards for academic excellence during the 32nd Annual Honors Convocation, held on April 20 in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Awards ranged from departmental honors to special recognitions, to Augustine Scholarships, the College's highest academic honor.

During the ceremony, Victoria Russo of South Windsor, a member of the Class of 2017, received an Augustine Scholarship, which is awarded to rising junior and senior students, who-through their academic achievement, leadership, community service and good character-best embody the Assumption College mission.

"The annual Honors Convocation is a recognition of the academic excellence achieved and demonstrated by our students," said Louise Carroll Keeley, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at Assumption College. "This event gives the College community-faculty, staff, friends and family-an opportunity to celebrate these students and their accomplishments."
