Holiday Shopping Safety Tips for Black Friday and Beyond

Planning on heading out to the Black Friday (or in some cases Black Thursday) sales? Take the following tips from the South Windsor Police Department into account when doing your holiday shopping this season.

Safe Holiday Shopping Tips (via the South Windsor Police Department):

Even though you are rushed and thinking about many things, stay alert to your surroundings. Keep cell phone calls to a minimum while walking to and from your car.

Always park where there is plenty of light, not only around your car, but also from your car to the mall or store entrance.

Shop with a friend, and don’t hesitate to ask for a security escort if you feel unsafe.

Keep your car locked at all times, use the trunk of your car to keep your packages out of sight.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and notify a credit card issuer immediately if your credit or debit card is lost or stolen.

Remove expensive items, such as GPS units, Ipods, and purses/computer cases from view and lock them in the trunk.

Have your keys in your hand before you go to your car.

When shopping online, shop at reputable, secure sites with encrypted payment transfer pages.

Ask a neighbor to take in packages left on your doorstep if you aren’t home to accept delivery.
