Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Jewish year and is a holiday that celebrates the creation of the world, something that’s reflected in its name, which means “head of the year” in Hebrew.
Rosh Hashanah 2019 (5780)will begin at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 29, and will continue through nightfall on Tuesday, October 1, marking the start of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of reflection and repentance that concludes with Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement.
At Temple Beth Hillel in South Windsor, the members are getting the temple ready to bring in the New Year. Many will come together at services and enjoy a bite to eat after at Temple Beth Hillel’s Annual Kehilia Konnection. Kehilia Konnection is a gathering that the people of TBH have been doing for the many years. They come together and enjoy some nosh and each other’s company as they celebrate the beginning of the new Jewish year after services on First day Rosh Hashanah. One of the most popular Rosh Hashanah customs involves eating apple slices dipped in honey, sometimes after saying a special prayer. Ancient Jews believed apples had healing properties, and the honey signifies the hope that the new year will be sweet. Rosh Hashanah meals usually include an assortment of sweet treats for the same reason.
