Man Charged In Connection To Baby's 'Unexplained Injuries'

South Windsor Police say the 5-month-old child was under the man's care and was found to be bleeding from the mouth with labored breathing.

A 23-year-old man has been charged after a 5-month-old baby under his care was found with “unexplained injuries,” according to South Windsor Police.

South Windsor Police arrested Kelson Dooley, 23, on a warrant on Dec. 18 following a joint investigation with the Department of Children and Families.

Police responded to a medical call for a 5-month-old child with unexplained injuries in September.

Police said the child was under Dooley’s care and was bleeding from the mouth and had labored breathing, which required hospitalization.

The Hartford Courant reports that in multiple interviews, Dooley told investigators that he didn’t know how the baby was injured and that he had left him in a bouncy seat when he suddenly started making grunting noises. Dooley told police he thought the child was trying to pass a bowel movement, but then the baby’s eyes wouldn’t open and he became unresponsive, according to the Courant.

Dooley later confessed to a social worker in a text message that he had fallen asleep with the baby on the couch and woke up on top of him.

Dooley was charged with risk of injury to a minor, cruelty to persons, and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Dooley was held on $120,000 court-set bond and was scheduled to be presented at Manchester Superior Court on Monday.
