Pancreatic Cancer 5k Walk/Run Event
Information on Purplestride, pancreatic cancer, awareness, volunteering

This Saturday, June 18th, myself along with family and friends will be participating in PurpleStride, an event dedicated to providing hope and awareness to pancreatic cancer. The event takes place at Hubbard Park in Meriden. If you would like to sign up for this great event or learn more information check out their website purplestride.kintera.org/connecticut. This is my family's 5th year participating in memory of my mom, Donna, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2013.
Pancreatic cancer is not as well-known as other cancers, in fact, it is considered a silent killer since most people are not diagnosed until stage 4, because symptoms don't usually appear until it is advanced. My mom had stage 1B pancreatic cancer, which means it was limited to the pancreas and greater than 2cm. Watching her suffer so much inspired me to do more to get involved. In 2014, we raised over $6,000 in her memory and we were recognized as the top fundraising team.
I am also a volunteer for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which is the non-profit organization that hosts the PurpleStride 5ks nationwide. It is my mission to spread awareness, give people hope, and engage in my community. My mom was a friendly and thoughtful person and was always helping others, now it is my chance to do the same.
