Patch Readers Sound Off on Stop Signs in South Windsor
We asked Patch Readers if their neighborhoods could use more stop signs. Here are some intersections they flagged as hazardous.

South Windsor, CT - If you’ve noticed an intersection in your neighborhood that could use a stop sign, you’re not alone.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that one-third of all intersection crashes in the United States occur at crossings controlled by stop signs. While they aren’t a perfect solution to dangerous intersections, studies have shown that installing all-way signs can reduce accidents by 40 to 60 percent.
When we asked Patch Readers in South Windsor where they wanted to see a stop sign, some asked for stoplights while others just requested that drivers stop at the signs that are already in place. That’s not too much to ask according to a report from the Federal Highway Administration that showed the simple, and cheap, addition of “Stop Ahead” wording on roadways reduced accidents at controlled intersections by 15 percent.

We realize that no one knows the roads in South Windsor better than its residents. Here’s what Patch Readers shared with us about their neighborhood’s intersections:
- "The 'entrance' four way intersection at Evergreen walk needs to be a four way stop. Right now only the north and south have the stop sign. It causes so much confusion. I understand that during the holidays it may back up too much onto Buckland, figure out something for that time of year."
- "Foster St at the crosswalk to Orchard Hill School. Cars come barreling up the hill with no visibility for kids crossing the street."
- "Northview could use one at the intersection of Simcka. For a 'residential' neighborhood, people do about 50 mph."
- "The stop signs that are in place should be monitored before we add more. The ones on Kelly at Laurel & Spruce should have a cop waiting especially during bus times. I could count over a dozen on a daily basis that done even attempt to stop."
- "We could use a cop on Kelly Rd area. They blow through the stop signs all the time!"
- "Pick a spot on lower Quarry Brook Drive."
