SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — We return to the pages of an amazing picture book entitled Images of America: South Windsor, compiled in 2017 by Claire Lobdell for the Wood Memorial Library & Museum. The book, containing 128 pages of fascinating photos from the town's history, is available for purchase at the library's museum store here.

On page 94 is a circa 1950 look at the South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department Station 3. For many years, the group operated out of a firehouse at 124 Sullivan Avenue. In 2009, a new Station 3 was constructed at 232 West Road.

The old fire station now houses the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter, a municipally owned and operated animal care shelter which provides a humane, caring facility for sick, stray or injured animals that come into the custody of municipal officials in South Windsor, East Hartford or Manchester. The shelter was founded in 2013 in honor of Gary K. Tyler, who served as South Windsor Chief of Police from 1987 to 2010.
