1. Because of the concern for FAT in our diet, many companies developed FAT FREE foods. The problem is when removing FAT, in order to preserve taste, you must add DOUBLE or TRIPLE the amount of SUGAR in processed food. This excess sugar you consume WILL be stored as FAT by your body. So, there is NO SUCH THING as FAT FREE

2. Soda Consumption in the U.S., (sometimes called “LIQUID CANDY”), during the past thirty years, has increased by 61% in adults and has more than doubled in children and adolescents. (Nutrition Action Newsletter, Sept. 2004)

The average 12-ounce can of soda contains about 40 grams of refined sugars. That's    10 teaspoons of pure sugar. Would you ever eat 10 teaspoons of sugar at once? Diets high in refined sugars can promote obesity, increase the risk of diabetes/ high blood pressure/ and heart disease.

Sugars* /Content of Carbonated Non-Diet Soft Drinks

Minute Maid Orange Soda (Coca-Cola Co.) 48g /12tsp

Mountain Dew (PepsiCo) 46g/12tsp

The U. S. Department of Agriculture recommends a person who consumes 2,000 calories each day should not have more than 40 grams of refined sugars each day!

Therefore, 3 CANS of COKE each day = 120 grams of refined sugar

Carbonated drinks are the single biggest source of refined sugars in the American diet. U.S. per person consumption of sweeteners (cane and beet sugars, corn syrup, honey, molasses) is 158.4 pounds/year.

  • corn sweeteners, 89.1 pounds
  • cane and beet sugars, 67.9 pounds
  • all others, 1.4 pounds

During the years 1989 to 2008, calories from sugary beverages increased by 60% in children ages 6 to 11, from 130 to 209 calories per day, and the percentage of children consuming them rose from 79% to 91%. (Lasater G, Piernas C, Popkin BM. Beverage patterns and trends among school-aged children in the US, 1989-2008. Nutr J. 2011;10:103).

Beverage companies in the US spent roughly $3.2 billion marketing carbonated beverages in 2006, with nearly a half billion dollars of that marketing aimed directly at youth ages 2–17.  (US Federal Trade Commission. Marketing Food to Children and Adolescents: A Review of Industry Expenditures, Activities, and Self-Regulation. 2008).

Coca-Cola spent $2.9 billion on marketing worldwide in 2010. (Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution 2011 ).
