Reenactors Visit South Windsor Museum

14th CT Volunteer Infantry Regiment Civil War Group at Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse Museum August 18.

The South Windsor Historical Society will host Civil War re-enactors from the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry (CVI) Regiment, Co. G, August 18, at the Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse Museum, 771 Ellington Rd.
Frank Niederwerfer, president, and other members of the Co. G unit will be in authentic uniforms and will discuss area involvement in the war from 2 to 4 p.m. They will also display photographs and implements related to the conflict. The program is free and will include light refreshments.

The 14th CVI was mustered into service in August in 1862, with dozens of area men assigned to Co. D. Within days they were thrust into the Battle of Antietem and by the war’s end participated in three dozen key battles and skirmishes. Among the South Windsor men in the 14th CVI were Oliver Dart, an ancestor of Niederwerfer; William Hogan, Frederick Lathrop, George Morton, brothers Erwin F. and Frank E. Stoughton; Chelsea C. Vinton, and Henry Williams.

The local history museum was built as a one-room school for the 5th school district in 1862 It replaced an older school on the opposite side of the street, which several area Civil War soldiers had attended.
