Retail Giant Closing South Windsor Logistics Center

SOUTH WINDSOR — Macy's has designated its logistics and operations center in South Windsor for closure. Jobs will be eliminated starting this fall.

The once-mighty retail chain made the announcement in a federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, commonly know as a WARN notice, on Wednesday in a formal letter to the state Department of Labor.

In the letter, the chain's representatives said Macy's "entire Backstage operational unit is to be closed." Macy's Backstage is the company's affordable clothing arm.

A total of 53 positions will be eliminated between Nov. 17 and Nov. 30, according to the WARN notice.

A total of four positions will be eliminated between Nov. 30 and Dec. 13, according to the notice.

A total of 21 positions will be eliminated between Feb. 1 and Feb. 14, 2020, according to the paperwork.

Macy's has fallen on troublesome financial times over the past few years and its last earnings report filed in August is a reflection of that.

Earnings of 28 cents per share missed Wall Street analyst estimates of 45 cents per share. The 28-cent mark was way short of the 70 cents per share reported for the previous year. Same-store sales rose just 0.3 percent.

Macy's still has retail outlets in several Connecticut towns, including:

• Danbury
• Farmington
• Manchester
• Meriden
• Milford
• Stamford
• Trumbull
• Waterbury
• Waterford

The Enfield location in the once-thriving Enfield Square Mall, which drew business from across the border in Massachusetts, has been closed now for three years.

Macy's said in the notice that workers could have opportunities to apply for "transfers."
