South Windsor Boys Volleyball Falls to Enfield

Bobcats open the season with two consecutive losses.

The South Windsor High boys volleyball team showed its youth and inexperience in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-14) home loss to Enfield High on Friday night.

Indeed, the Bobcats, who are coming off a strong 2012 campaign that included a CCC East title, showed flashes of cohesion and strength. But the team, which does not have a JV squad to help develop players, is still a work in progress.

“We are such a young, inexperienced team, we just have to keep working hard and learn from our mistakes,” South Windsor head coach Jim Holt said. “I have six guys who have never played volleyball before and I’m trying to get them ready and on the court against teams that have been playing together for three or four years.”

Enfield looked exactly like the team Holt described, with a senior-laden squad that includes outside hitter Kevin Camidge, Jason Xiong, Myles Samba-Green, Zachary Corso, Kyle Maynard and Derek DeMarino.

While South Windsor (0-2) is looking to gain experience, Enfield (1-1) has its collective sight set on bigger things.

“Our goal is ... we want to make the tournament,” Raiders head coach Judy Joslin said. “We’re going to make the tournament and go from there. We have a lot of potential, a lot of guys who work hard.”

Still, despite the Raiders’ experience, South Windsor remained competitive for the first two games.

“We really hung in there, considering we have such inexperienced players,” Holt said. “They’re really having fun and working hard.”

South Windsor’s Simon Luxemburg had 9 assists and 1 block in the loss, while outside hitter Kevin Huang had 5 kills and outside hitter Connor Grothe had 4 aces.
