Featured this year will be an encampment of Company G, Fourteenth Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, a reenactment group that will provide demonstrations of Civil War camp life. The unit was mustered into service in August in 1862, with dozens of area men assigned to Co. D. Within days they were thrust into the Battle of Antietem and by the war’s end participated in three dozen key battles and skirmishes.

Other events include demonstrations of pottery making, crocheting baskets from cloth strips; booths and displays by three dozen crafters, vendors, and antique dealers. There will also be hay rides, a petting zoo, music by the Doofus Band and The Sweetest Key, a magician, animal balloons, demonstrations of carding and spinning wool, honey production, face painting, and children’s games and activities. There will also be alpacas from the Aussakita Acres Farm & Country Store which will be selling items made with Alpaca wool.

A society booth will also have other historical displays, an auction, and sales of souvenirs, food, and drinks with proceeds going to support its local projects.

“There’s a lot of history in South Windsor,” said Rivard. “Our goals include preserving that heritage and making people more aware of it. Thanks to grants from the Rockville Bank Foundation, First Niagara Bank, SBM Foundation, and other sponsors, admission and parking will again be free this year. Donations are welcome. We are also grateful to Carol Birden and David Raymond for allowing the Society to use their historic property for the event.”

The Society will also open its Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse Museum, 771 Ellington Rd., Oct. 5 from noon to 3 p.m. Built as a one-room school for the 5th school district in 1862, it houses displays of local agricultural and other implements of daily life as well as a vintage classroom. Parking and admission are free, donations welcome.
