South Windsor Girls Lacrosse Off to a Fast Start
Defense is the key in victories over Northwest Catholic and NFA.

It’s not just that South Windsor girls lacrosse team is off to a 2-0 start to the season, with victories over Northwest Catholic and Norwich Free Academy.
The wins are nice, but it’s how they’ve gotten there.
Yes, there is a potent attack, led by senior midfielder Tori Russo (8 goals in two games), along with seniors Ashley Murtha (6 goals) and Emma Richard (3 goals).
But it’s the defense that has drawn raves from head coach Ed Duclos.
“We’re more athletic and more competitive,” Duclos said.
Indeed, the Bobcats have allowed only nine goals in the two contests, including just three to Northwest Catholic, the defending state Class S champion, in the first match of the year.
A core group of seniors comprising goalie Meg Brault and defenders Jackie Pilatti, Angie King and Taylor Pendergast - along with Becca Karlins - has combined to disrupt opposing attacks.
“They’ve been outstanding,” Duclos said. “They’re good athletes back there. It’s fun to watch them.”
With a new offense installed to go along with the stifling defense, South Windsor is looking forward to a successful season.
Against Northwest Catholic on April 3, the Bobcats led 5-0 at the half - an impressive feat considering the Indians’ potent attack.
Russo was ruthless, scoring four goals, while Murtha had 2 and Sierra Hibbs had one in a 7-3 victory. Brault had 4 saves.
The Bobcats were even more lethal in a 14-6 victory over NFA on Saturday.
Russo and Murtha each had 4 goals, while Emma Richard had a hat trick and Bridget Kelly, Hibbs, and Jenny Gilligan each had one goal apiece. Brault had 5 saves in the victory.
“I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished in just two games,” Duclos said. “To play defense like that this early in the season, and with the offense on track, it’s exciting.”
