South Windsor Obituary: Ethel Singer, 73

Ethel Linda (Haindl) Singer, 73, of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of South Windsor, beloved wife of George A. Singer passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 6, 2017.

Ethel was born on October 30, 1943 and was raised in the Bronx, NY, where she met George at the young age of 13. She and George became an on again off again pair for the next several years and finally became engaged Thanksgiving 1963. Ethel attended Mount Vernon Hospital School of Nursing starting in September 1961, graduating in September 1964. She was rendered so speechless after watching her first labor and delivery that she instantly knew she had to become a maternity nurse.

Ethel and George were married in a ceremony among friends and family in the Bronx, NY on February 27, 1965. Ethel then joined George who was already living in CT, where she started her family and went to work at Manchester Memorial Hospital as a committed labor and delivery registered nurse. Ethel led a very fruitful life, she became a household name to thousands of families over her 36 year career.

Ethel was touched and honored when children she helped deliver earlier in her career came back to give birth to children of their own. Those new parents spoke fondly of Ethel's love and guidance as they had heard about it from their own parents.

She made the decision to retire in 2001, just as computers were becoming mainstream in the healthcare industry, joking that she never met a computer she liked, and that it was time for her to retire.

Ethel leaves behind her husband of almost 52 years, George A. Singer of Boynton Beach, FL, as well as her sisters, Eleanor Miller and her husband Ken of Ridge, NY and Phyllis Wingate of Miami, FL. She also leaves behind her children, Corrie Henry and her significant other Bruce Nickerson of Glastonbury, Debra Early and her husband Michael of Wildwood, MO, and Scott Singer and his wife Heather, of Wake Forest, NC. Ethel also leaves six grandchildren, Kaylie and Connor Henry of Glastonbury, Kaitlyn and Colin Early of Wildwood, MO and Allyson and Alexander Singer of Wake Forest, NC. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Ethel was the third of four children of the late Robert and Eleanor Haindl, and was pre-deceased by her brother, Robert "Red" Haindl Jr.

Her family will receive friends at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home located at 419 Buckland Rd. South Windsor on Friday, February 10 from 5PM to 8PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, February 11 at 10AM with a burial to follow at Wapping Cemetery in South Windsor.
