South Windsor Patriotic Commission Holds Essay Contest

The student essay contest is in conjunction with the town's Memorial Day festivities.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT - We are pleased to announce the annual contest for the young residents of South Windsor in connection with the Memorial Day commemoration activities to be held on Monday, May 27, 2019. The contest features essay topics for three different grade levels and posters for the K-2 level. The essay topics have been coordinated with the school curriculum for each level. All entries must be received by the Patriotic Commission no later than Thursday, February 28, 2019.

Judging will be done for each grade level separately. Awards will be made solely at the discretion of the Patriotic Commission members. The first place prize for the winner of each grade level is a $100.00 Barnes and Noble Gift Card. The second place prize is a $50 gift card and the third place prize is a $25 gift card.

The winners will be announced by May 3rd. All winners will be invited to ride in specially marked cars in the Memorial Day parade and be able to participate in the ceremony at Veterans’ Memorial Park on Monday, May 27th. Each winner will also receive recognition from the Mayor at a Town Council meeting. The first place winners will have the opportunity to read their winning essays at the Town Council meeting.

POSTER (maximum size 12” by 14”) - My favorite place to see the American flag and name the place. (Written notes are not required and will not count toward judging.)

3-5

ESSAY – How my family celebrates a patriotic holiday. (300 words or less)

6-8

ESSAY – What does freedom mean to me. (350 words or less)

9-12

ESSAY – What sacrifices I would make to preserve our freedom. (500 words or less)
