SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — A career spanning more than three decades will soon come to a close, as South Windsor Police Chief Scott Custer has announced he plans to retire, effective Sept. 18.

A 31-year veteran of the South Windsor police force, Custer was promoted to chief in 2018. He had served as deputy chief for three years prior.

Custer was hired in 1989 and served the department in many roles through the years, including as lieutenant and sergeant in the Support Services division, as well as Public Information Officer, Recruiting Officer, Evidence Officer and Communications Manager. He served as a Criminal Investigator, a D.A.R.E. Officer, Field Training Officer, Narcotics Investigator and Patrol Supervisor.

"It was always my intention to work for several more years; however the COVID-19 crisis made me reevaluate my priorities," Custer told staff Monday. "I was going to leave earlier this summer, however when George Floyd was murdered, I felt it was important to work through the community reaction with you. But now it’s time to focus on my family and take on new challenges. I am extremely proud of what the South Windsor Police Department has become and the work you all do. This is an incredibly difficult decision for me, but I do so now because I am confident the organization is in good hands."
