More than 5,000 students will start the new school year in South Windsor on Aug. 29.

New Staff Members

Philip R. Smith School has welcomed Michelle Dixon as the new principal. Dixon began working at the school on July 1, 2012.

Timothy Edwards Middle School has welcomed Vincent Ferderici as the new assistant principal. Federici began in July, 2012.

Pleasant Valley Elementary welcomed Tiffany Caouette into the role of principal over the summer. Caouette has spent the last decade teaching in various roles in Hartford.

Other new staff include: Kristen Babcock - Grade 1;  Christal Bainville - Grade 3; Erin Clark - long-term substitute Grade 1; Kelly Burke - Reading Consultant; Susan Klosowski - Grade 4; Laurel Rempel - Grade 4; Doreen Scibelli - Grade 5; Jennifer Williamson - AM Kindergarten;  and Marcia Lee - long term substitute Art.

In Lunch News

In June 2012, by unanimous vote of the South Windsor Board of Education the cost of school lunches was increased for this school year. The increase in school breakfast/lunch prices are as follows:

  • Elementary school breakfast by $0.10 and lunch by $0.25;
  • Middle school breakfast by $0.10; and
  • High school breakfast by $0.25 and lunch by $0.15, as well as a district-wide increase in 8 oz. milk prices by $0.10 and 10 oz. milk by $0.15.

According to new , South Windsor food offerings have changed for this school year as well.  A comparison between last year and this year's lunch guidelines is provided on the South Windsor Public Schools website.

New Equipment

Eli Terry Elementary will begin the school year with four new smartboards thanks to an $11,000 donation from the Eli Terry PTO and an anonymous donor.

The South Windsor Education Fund also awarded $8,200 to South Windsor teachers Julie Ratajczak, Nicole Long, and Kim Lavado at the end of the 2011-12 school year. About $4,700 of this award will be used at P.R. Smith Elementary School by Ratajczak and Long for the purchase of document cameras and smart responders for grades 1 and 2. The remaining $3,500 will be used by Kim Lavado at Wapping Elementary School to be used toward reading intervention studies for students in grades 1-5. The grant will go toward buying the projector and motorized cart to support a portable SmartBoard.
