South Windsor Youth Hockey Coaches Game Raises Money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Event raises several hundred dollars.

The fifth annual South Windsor Youth Hockey Coaches Game took on a different flavor this year, with the proceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

This year’s game, played at the South Windsor Arena on Sunday, raised several hundred dollars to fight breast cancer.

“We decided that instead of the kids cheer on a bunch of old, overweight, not-so-in-shape hockey players, this way at least it will be for a good cause,” said Kurt Niemiec, who played on the Knights Gold Team.

And the game was played all in good fun, whether the coaches wanted to channel their inner Gretzky or McSorley, depending on the level of skill or bloodlust, as the case may be.

“It’s a fun get together, and the kids get to heckle the coaches,” said Niemiec. “It’s always a good time and always a pretty good turnout.”

And, all kidding aside, the game was nothing but good fun.

“If the gloves come off, it’s to go get the defibrillator,” quipped Steve Fastiggi.
