Sunscreen: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall . . .

According to the American Cancer Society, applying sunscreen to all areas of exposed skin should be part of your year-round daily routine. This season, remember these sunscreen tips from the ACS:

1. When choosing a sunscreen product, be sure to read the label. Sunscreens with broad spectrum protection (against both UVA and UVB rays) and with sun protection factor (SPF) values of 30 or higher are recommended.

2. Higher SPF numbers do mean more protection, but many people do not understand the SPF scale. SPF 15 sunscreens filter out about 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 sunscreens filter out about 97%. SPF 50 sunscreens filter about 98% and SPF 100 about 99%. As you can see, the higher you go, the smaller the difference becomes. Remember, no sunscreen protects you completely.

3. Sunscreens are no longer allowed to be labeled as "waterproof" or "sweatproof" because these terms can be misleading. Sunscreens can claim to be "water resistant", but they have to state whether they protect the skin for 40 or 80 minutes of swimming or sweating based on testing.

4. Check the expiration date of the sunscreen to be sure it is still effective.

I am frequently asked what sunscreen I recommend.  VI Derm is a professional grade sunscreen with an SPF of 50.  This botanically based sunscreen also contains:  Organic green tea, aloe vera, sun flower oil and Vitamin A.  VI Derm sunscreen is available for purchase at The Pretty Face Place.
