The Year Without Christmas Tree Shopping at Dzen Tree Farm in South Windsor

The family announced they will be unable to sell Christmas trees this year.

After more than 90 years of providing Christmas trees to families, the Dzen Tree Farm family announced on their Facebook page and website that they will be unable to open for the tree season this year.

John Dzen Jr. wrote on the Facebook page that they have been denied use of the traditional entry point used by customers due to a neighboring subdivision that is being developed.

“It is with deep regret that we announce that Dzen Tree Farm, Inc. will not be open for the 2014 Christmas tree season. Due to the building of the subdivision to our south, we have been denied use of the point of access traditionally used by customers to enter the farm. We have been unable to resolve the issue of access to the farm with both the Town of South Windsor and the developer. After 90 plus years on Barber Hill Road and 45 plus years in the Christmas tree industry, it is unfortunate that we will be unable to open for the 2014 season due to circumstances beyond our control. We will continue to pursue every avenue to resolve the issue so that we can welcome our customers back for the 2015 Christmas tree season. Please visit the Connecticut Christmas Growers Association website at ctchristmastree.org to find your local farm for the 2014 Christmas tree season.”

Update:

NBC Connecticut reports that the farm located nearby, Dzen’s Christmas Trees, will be opening on Nov. 28.

The competing tree farms on Barber Hill Road are owned by cousins within the Dzen family, according to NBC, and one cousin sold land to developers to build a group of homes on the property last year.

The developer of the property, Rob Mannarino, told NBC Connecticut that the bank won’t let him give Dzen’s Tree Farm an easement and that the town and homeowners don’t want all the traffic through the neighborhood.
