ASHFORD, CT — Troop C's canine team of Drago and Trooper Kyle Kaelberer continued a busy holiday weekend Monday when they tracked down four men who fled from a burning, stolen car.

Two days earlier, they helped apprehend a three-time drunken driving offender who fled a vehicle after knocking down a traffic sign in Tolland.

The second weekend arrest came at 7 p.m. on Monday after state troopers responded to a report of a car fire on Interstate 84, near Exit 72 in Ashford. Firefighters and police located a Hyundai Sonata that was fully engulfed in flames, but there were no occupants in sight, according to an incident report. The car was determined to have been stolen from Hartford, according to an incident report.

Drago and Kaelberer responded to the scene and began a track along the shoulder of I-84, then onto Frontage Road, according to an incident report. Drago continued pulling Kaelberer into the woods, south of the highway, and after about a mile-and-a-half, they located four men wearing masks, according to an incident report.

State police said Drago "assisted in detaining" them until Troopers could place all four in custody. The four were aged 19,18,17 and 16, state police said.
