The building was "a total loss," according to Deputy Stamford Fire Chief Paul Newman, who noted several vehicles were inside at the time.

STAMFORD, CT — A large fire broke out at an auto body repair shop in the South End area of Stamford on Wednesday and injured one person, according to the Stamford Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Paul Newman told Patch firefighters responded to the single-story building in the 30-block of Dyke Lane at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Around 50 firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 45 minutes, Newman said, noting that the building was "a total loss." Several vehicles were inside the shop at the time and also involved in the fire, Newman said.

"This was an all-hands effort led by first and second alarm companies. Initial arriving firefighters were confronted with a very dynamic and dangerous situation involving an auto repair facility. Due to the efforts of all responding Stamford firefighters, the fire was quickly brought under control and contained to the unit of origin, saving an adjacent property containing several businesses," Deputy Chief & Incident Commander Matt Palmer added in a news release.

A worker inside the shop suffered minor injuries and was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment, Newman said. There were no injuries reported to fire personnel.

The blaze caused smoky conditions in the South End and Downtown areas, and the fire department received "a lot of secondary calls" from the public Wednesday night as a result, Newman noted.
