2 Stamford HS Students Receive National Writing Awards

From SPS: Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that both Stamford High School Rising Seniors John Bolognino and Samantha Heller recently earned a2018 Achievement Award in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The SHS students were nominated and coached by SHS English Department Head Beth Gillin. Bolognino and Heller were among only 14 students statewide and 227 total to win a Certificate of Superior Writing award

Each year the NCTE invites English departments in the United States, Canada, the Virgin Islands and American Schools Abroad to nominate the writing of current juniors for consideration. Each submission must include both a “themed” writing sample, based on a NCTE provided prompt and a ‘best’ writing sample, in which the student can choose their own genre or combination of genres for submission.

\In a letter to the winners, NCTE Executive Director Emily Kirkpatrick said, “This contest recognizes excellent writing at the secondary level . . . no matter what path you choose to follow in your future education or career, we hope your Superior Writing recognition in this competition is the first step in a lifelong relationship with the power of your words.”

According to the organization, student writing is judged on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. Go to the NCTE website for more information.
