Sorority Assists Those in Need

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.-Omicron Upsilon Omega (AKA-OUO) chapter hosted several community outreach projects during the months of October and November. To kick off its Building Your Economic Legacy: Operation AKA Assist Target, the sorority provided support to the homeless and disadvantaged in the greater Norwalk, Stamford areas. Over 30 coats and jackets were collected for Person to Person a non-profit charitable agency that assists those in need living in Norwalk, Stamford and surrounding communities. In addition, pantsuits, skirt suits, pants, blouses, sweaters, dresses, skirts, jewelry, purses, scarves, shoes, hosiery, and cash were collected for Dress for Success, a not for profit organization that provides professional attire to help women flourish in the workforce and in life. The sorority provided dinner for over 35 women and children at Inspirica, Inc. in Stamford where their mission is to address homelessness and its root causes.
Members of the sorority hosted its signature program known as #CAP (College Admissions Process) at Stamford High School. High school seniors participated in a college panel discussion, received financial aid and scholarship information, engaged in essay writing workshops and mock interviews. A second #CAP program is planned for high school juniors in the spring.
Finally, in recognition of AKA Caregivers National Day, a Community Impact Day, on November 16, the sorority presented a donation to Elder House Adult Day Center in Norwalk. The donation was made to provide a little relief to the daughter of a selected client who is not eligible for the Connecticut sponsored Adult Day Center subsidy and has to pay out-of-pocket.
