Apartment Fire Hospitalizes 2 Residents: Stamford FD

Firefighters responded to a high-rise apartment building on a report of a fire on May 18, according to the Stamford Fire Department.

STAMFORD, CT — Two residents were hospitalized following a fire at a large apartment building in Stamford over the weekend, according to the Stamford Fire Department.

On May 18 shortly before 9:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the lobby at an apartment building in the 70 block of Prospect Street.

Firefighters found a floor sanding machine on fire in a first floor apartment, and it was quickly put out with portable extinguishers, fire officials said in a news release.

However, the fire caused a "significant amount" of smoke that moved into the first floor hallway and lobby area as residents were evacuating the 12-story, 140-unit building, the SFD said.

Two residents were treated at the scene for medical issues related to the evacuation and smokey conditions, and they were taken to Stamford Hospital for further evaluation, the SFD said.

Overall, 43 firefighters responded to the scene. Prospect Street was closed for the duration of the incident.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Division.
