Are carpet & upholstery protectors - an elusive investment.

These are add on services that many carpet and upholstery cleaners offer.  They generally are expensive and provide questionable benefits.  There will always be stains that defy these treatments and manufacturers and resellers will use industry hype to promote them and explain away their inadequacies.  Why are they marketed to begin with?  They are high mark up and may prevail under very exacting conditions.  Generally, there might a short term benefit.  If you look at it logically, you walk on your carpets, constantly move on your furniture, your children’s priorities aren’t yours, nor are your pets, and with spills, slobbers, and the stampede of neighbors kids, don’t you think these products are going to breakdown fairly quickly.  That’s being optimistic.  That assumes that these products were also being applied appropriately.

The reason they’re sold is they are high mark up.  Some companies will market these as part of their premium, platinum package as opposed to something more economical, and realistically sensible.  Buying these inflated products will certainly enable those providing the service to stock up on precious metals such as platinum or palladium.

There are also recommended maintenance requirements that need to be followed to assure that you get maximum benefit.  Then there’s a question of whether people or pets should be in the room when they’re being applied.  So if they're claiming their services are completely eco-friendly I would have to question why the manufacturers clearly advise not to have caged pets in the areas where they're being applied (such as cute bunny rabbits that are often sensitive to airborne products).
