Stamford police have confirmed the man died after being transported to a hospital in "grave condition" earlier in the week.

STAMFORD, CT — A man who was in "grave condition" after his canoe capsized in Stamford Harbor on Tuesday died later that day, Stamford police have confirmed.
According to Capt. Richard Conklin, the man was identified as 63-year-old Jeffrey Schwartz.
Conklin said Schwartz was in grave condition and his pulse was weak after he was pulled from the water Tuesday morning. He died later that afternoon after being taken to a hospital, Conklin said. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Schwartz appeared to be living on a sailboat in the harbor at the time of the incident and used the canoe to go back and forth between the boat and the shore, according to Conklin.
"It's an unfortunate, sad [incident]," Conklin said. "It seems like people down on the water knew him pretty well."

Police received a call about the capsized canoe around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. According to Conklin, a neighbor on Ocean Drive spotted Schwartz in the water and jumped in to help him.
The neighbor was able to reach Schwartz and pull him to shore, where he then performed CPR on him, Conklin said. Officers soon arrived, along with fire and EMS crews, and he was taken to a hospital.
Conklin said the breezy weather Tuesday morning was a factor in the canoe capsizing. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is investigating the incident.
