Complaints That Monroe Statue Backs Up Toward Church: Report

The 26-foot-tall, 30,000-pound statue of film icon Marilyn Monroe was erected in Downtown Stamford this week.

STAMFORD, CT — The 26-foot-tall, 30,000-pound statue of film icon Marilyn Monroe has been erected in Latham Park in Downtown Stamford for the summer, a massive undertaking that was completed this week, reports the Stamford Advocate.

The statue depicts the famous scene from the film "The Seven Year Itch," where Monroe's character stands over a subway grate. As a burst of air travels through the grate, the skirt of her white dress blows upward and exposes her posterior.

Now that giant statue posterior - ahem - "faces" the First Congregational Church, a fact highlighted by local photojournalist Michael Cummo on his Twitter page.

Stamford is the fifth city in the world to host the giant statue, Sandy Goldstein, president of the Stamford Business Improvement District, told Westfair Communications. The group helped bring the Seward Johnson-created statue to Stamford, with dozens of other smaller human statues that have been placed around the city.

The district is counting on the statue being a nice attraction for Stamford this summer and generate a lot of foot traffic in the area.

Thursday evening, June 7, the group was scheduled to host a screening of The Seven Year Itch to help celebrate the statue's arrival.
