He was dating Madonna Badger, the mother of the three children and daughter of her two parents that were killed in the blaze. The $1.7 million Stamford home was being renovated by Borcina.

Borcina originally told police that he placed a bag of ashes in the mudroom. He now says that he lied to investigators in order to protect Badger from carrying the burden.

Father of the children Matthew Badger is suing the city and has offered to settle for $17 million, according to the Hartford Courant.

He also offered a $3 million settlement to Best Electrical Contracting, who did some work on the house prior to the fire. They both declined settlements.
