STAMFORD, CT — Two officers were in the right place at the right time Friday as they were able to stop what appeared to be an abduction attempt, in which a Stamford man is accused of trying to drag a woman away, then claiming he was President Donald Trump when officers intervened, police said.

Lt. Eugene Dohmann said the two officers, Kevin Lochard and Jessica Charres, responded to the area of Broad Street around 10 a.m. for an unrelated matter. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

While in the area, the officers heard a woman screaming across the street, near the intersection of Summer and Broad streets, Dohmann said.

At first, the officers thought a car accident might have occurred in the area, Dohmann said. They soon realized a man had grabbed the woman in a tight "bear hug" and was trying to drag her away, Dohmann said.

The woman, who is in her late 20's, had her two young children with her, ages 2 and 4, at the time of the incident, Dohmann said.

According to the lieutenant, the incident appeared to be "the beginning stages" of an abduction attempt.

Lochard and Charres quickly ran across the street to help the woman while others in the area were still trying to figure out what was going on, Dohmann said. Some were just beginning to call 911.

"These officers already arrived on the scene and took action," Dohmann said.

As officers intervened, the man screamed "I'm Trump" repeatedly, seemingly referring to the president, Dohmann said.

"He's screaming 'Trump, Trump, Trump' the whole time; 'I'm Trump, I'm Trump, I'm Trump', not making any sense," Dohmann said. "It was bizarre."

Officers were able to wrestle the man to the ground and place him under arrest, Dohmann said.

The man was later identified as Alan Lyle, 31, of Stamford. He was charged with third-degree assault, two counts of risk of injury, unlawful restraint and interfering with police.

Dohmann praised Lochard and Charres for their quick actions, referring to them as "knights in shining armor."

"That's what they must have looked like...before [people in the area] could even think about how to get help, these two officers were right there," Dohmann said. "They put a stop to what could have been a very terrible incident."

He also noted he was unsure why Lyle claimed to be Trump.

"I don't know what all of that meant...I don't know what his thought process was or why he came out with that," Dohmann said.
