Crimestopper Tip Leads To Illegal Gun Arrest: Stamford Police

STAMFORD, CT — Thanks to a tip that came into the Stamford Police Department's crime and gun stoppers tip line, a man was arrested and an illegal gun was taken off the streets this week.

Jermell "Polo" Sims, 43, of Stamford, was arrested on Oct. 10 after the SPD received information he was carrying an illegal gun, Assistant Stamford Police Chief Richard Conklin said.

An investigation into Sims culminated after a week when officers found him on the West Side of Stamford Tuesday just after 11 p.m. and arrested him in a parking lot in the 40 block of Clinton Avenue, Conklin said.

Sims was in possession of a loaded Ruger 9 mm handgun that had a high-capacity magazine, Conklin said.

Conklin noted that Sims is a "multi-convicted felon." He was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of ammunition, and illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine.

Sims was given a court-set bond of $250,000. He's scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 24.

The SPD crime and gun stoppers tip line offers rewards for anonymous information provided to the department that leads to an arrest. This program is supported by the Stamford Police Foundation and focuses on solving high-priority violent crimes.
