Dates For Graduation, Prom Finalized For Stamford High Schools

Stamford High School, Westhill High School and AITE will hold graduation ceremonies on June 20.

STAMFORD, CT — High School graduations in Stamford will take place on June 20, although specific times are still being ironed out.

In her weekly message to the district last Friday, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tamu Lucero said Stamford High, Westhill and AITE will all host graduation ceremonies on Monday, June 20, with a rain date of Tuesday, June 21.

Additionally, the adult education graduation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, and will be held at AITE.

"An early congratulations to our 2022 graduates and their families. The perseverance shown in the last 24 months through the global pandemic is commendable, noteworthy, and should be celebrated," Lucero said in her message.

During the Board of Education's Teaching, Learning and Community Committee meeting last Tuesday, Amy Beldotti, associate superintendent for teaching and learning, said SHS and WHS were interested in holding their ceremonies at 2 p.m., with AITE at 4 p.m. All three wanted rain dates for June 21.

"It is the strong feeling of our building administrators that outdoor ceremonies are much more meaningful and inclusive of all those who want to attend. They would really prefer to have a rain date than try to move things indoors. It makes sometimes multiple set-ups very difficult, and they just can't accommodate as many families," Beldotti said. "Being that we've had some tough times in the last two years and limiting so many things and so many people from events, that we'd really like to have these outdoors and the opportunity to have a rain date."

Board chair Jackie Heftman supported the concept of the rain date, but wasn't in favor of having SHS and WHS ceremonies at the same time.

"First of all, it limits what the board members can attend, and I also think it limits what family and friends can attend, because there are people that know people at both high schools that are graduating," she said.

Board member Fritz Cherry agreed.

In her weekly message, Lucero said specific times and details will be notified to graduates, families and friends once plans are finalized.

Also in her weekly message, Lucero said prom for AITE is scheduled for May 20. SHS and WHS will have proms on June 3.

Lucero also said fifth grade moving-up ceremonies will be held on June 17. Eighth grade moving-up ceremonies will be held on June 20.
