Doctors Now Able to Prescribe Fitness
PrescriptFit®, developed by a Stamford-based company, is intended to bridge the gap between the medical and fitness communities.
Designed to complement the now mainstream protocol of prescribing medications to treat chronic diseases such as obesity and arthritis, The U, independently owned and headquartered in Stamford, CT, has announced the launch of PrescriptFit®, a revolutionary On Demand wellness program designed to address specific medical conditions.
“Doctors have long co-prescribed exercise as part of their recommendations to patients, but what has been lacking is a system to ensure the patient adheres to this guidance and is monitored through their journey,” says Suzanne Vita Battinelli, founder and CEO of The U. “Now, doctors can efficiently provide patients with medically-endorsed, safe and effective exercise programs, all while receiving data regarding their usage and participation.”
PrescriptFit, which currently addresses health conditions such as obesity, heart disease, arthritis, and post-natal care, is accessible via The U’s app, allowing patients to move in the privacy of their own home, on their own schedule. The condition-specific programs run for 6 weeks and feature a progression of workouts and tailored lifestyle tips, focusing on items such as nutrition, hydration and breathing.

All programs have been developed under the oversight of a clinical advisory board, including doctors and trainers credentialed to work with specialty populations. Parameters have been put in place to ensure patients build a strong foundation before being progressed through movements that are ultimately included to address and improve their existing conditions.
"Movement is medicine, and PrescriptFit brings that truth to life by combining rigorous, evidence‐based medicine with cutting‐edge exercise science,” says Dr. Sean Altman, a Fairfield County-based functional medicine doctor specializing in orthopedic medicine, and a member of The U’s clinical advisory board. "I’m proud to support a program that goes well beyond the typical online workouts—delivering a level of safety and efficacy that truly elevates patient care. This initiative removes the guesswork from exercise, providing clinicians with transparent, accountable insights into patient adherence and progress."

There is no cost for a doctor to become a PrescriptFit referral partner, which includes customized marketing and digital integration, along with the delivery of individual usage reports pending patient permission. Participating patients receive a complimentary, private consultation with a specialist from The U to initiate the program and then can utilize the program at no cost for 2 weeks, before committing to a $40 a month subscription for ongoing access. This fee, which can be cancelled at any time, is also eligible to be covered via HSA/FSA with necessitated physician authorization.
“We’ve always considered ourselves on the same team with the medical community, and now PrescriptFit is paving the path to ensure we all achieve the same desired result, which is improved quality of life for patients,” says Battinelli. “By making fitness accessible, and more importantly, keeping it an active part of the conversation that happens within a doctor’s office, patients will feel the power of having a team of professionals in their corner who are genuinely invested in their wellbeing.”
