Units from the Turn of River Firehouse found heavy smoke at the front entrance and out of the eaves of the roof on the single-family home.
Firefighters forced the front door to the home open and found smoke and flames extending from the wall adjacent to the entryway, the SFD said. The walls in the foyer were opened and a hole was cut in the roof over the fire to prevent the flames from continuing to the attic space.

Much of the home was filled with "a moderate smoke condition," the SFD said, and a dog was found during a search for occupants in the first-floor bedroom.
The dog was rescued from the home and returned to its owner who was not home at the time of the fire, the SFD said.
Firefighters were able to place the fire under control in 22 minutes. The home was undergoing renovations, and the cause of the blaze is being investigated by the Stamford Fire Marshal's Division, the SFD said.
