My "Around the House " Tip of the Day for Tuesday February 6, 2024:Forgive me for this rant, but for over 40 years I have been doing Home Inspections. Most of our clients are very bright, college educated and successful. The problem is when it comes to identifying home problems they often do not know anything. So hiring a home inspector before they spend many thousands on a home is simply a necessity. I'm proud that our profession protects consumers, and I pride myself in thinking our job is to look carefully and objectively evaluate the home. So why am I mad... with the lack of inventory and higher interest rates buyers are being told that having a home inspection contingency will kill their chance to buy that home. So some Realtors across the USA and in Canada, are advising naïve buyers to give up the only safety that is typically protecting them from unknown expenses. Can you imagine paying high interest, paying significantly over asking price in bidding wars and then moving in only to find the roof is bad or the furnace is beyond it's designed life. Buying the money pit is not a laughing matter. Please warn anyone buying... unless they are very house savvy... do not waive your inspection for any reason.
