Stamford Public Schools To Dismiss Early Again On Thursday

High temperatures are expected to continue over the next couple of days, according to the National Weather Service.

STAMFORD, CT —Due to the extreme heat impacting the region, Stamford Public Schools has announced it will have early dismissal again on Thursday.

The school district held an early dismissal on Wednesday, too.

In a letter to families on Tuesday night, Superintendent of SPS Dr. Tamu Lucero said almost 60 percent of learning spaces in the district have central air or window cooling units, but the percentage varies widely from building to building.

The ROSCCO after-school program is canceled on Thursday. School administrators in buildings without central air conditioning will continue to have students, teachers, and staff rotate into cooler areas as needed, Lucero said in another letter to families Wednesday afternoon.

"We understand that unscheduled early release days create challenges with child care, and we appreciate your understanding," Lucero noted.

Parents are being urged to send students to school with light clothing and a water bottle that can be refilled at a bottle fill station throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s on Thursday, with the heat index around 97, according to the National Weather Service.

Gov. Ned Lamont on Wednesday announced that due to an updated weather forecast, he is directing Connecticut’s extreme hot weather protocol to be extended for an additional day and remain in effect through 8 p.m. Friday.

Several cooling centers are available throughout the city for residents looking to beat the heat.
