Former Stamford Democratic Chair Arrested On Ballot Fraud Charge

STAMFORD, CT — John Mallozzi, the former Chair of the Stamford Democratic City Committee, was arrested and charged Wednesday with absentee ballot fraud and forgery in connection with absentee ballots cast in the city’s 2015 municipal election, announced the state Division of Criminal Justice.

Mallozzi, of Spring Hill Lane North, was arrested by Inspectors from the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk on a warrant charging him with 14 counts of False Statement in Absentee Balloting and 14 counts of second-degree Forgery.

"The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Stamford/Norwalk State’s Attorney’s office following a complaint from the State Elections Enforcement Commission concerning absentee ballots cast in the municipal election held in Stamford in 2015," authorities stated.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, municipal election officials in Stamford "alerted authorities to improprieties after a person who was recorded as having voted by absentee ballot showed up at the polls to cast his ballot."

Both charges are class D felonies and are punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 on each count.

Mallozzi was released on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Feb. 11.

State’s Attorney Richard J. Colangelo, Jr., expressed his appreciation to the Inspectors in the State’s Attorney’s office, the State Elections Enforcement Commission and the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Scientific Services and the Stamford Police Department for their work on this case.

The case will be prosecuted by the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk, and prosecutors stressed that the charges are merely accusations and Mallozzi is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
