Fundraiser Launched After Flood Damages Special Needs Senior Dog Sanctuary In Stamford

STAMFORD, CT — The community is rallying to raise money to help the Special Needs Senior Dog Sanctuary recover after flash flooding destroyed the Stamford nonprofit's operating space earlier this week.

A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by nonprofit leader Todd Giorgi has raised over $10,000 as of Friday afternoon.

"On July 21, 2026, our world changed overnight," the fundraiser's description says. "A flash flood devastated our Special Needs Senior Dog Sanctuary in Stamford, Connecticut. The lower level of our home, where our sanctuary operates, filled with water, destroying the space where our senior dogs live, heal, and receive daily care."

Flood insurance does not cover the damaged level of the home, the nonprofit said, noting the flooding destroyed or severely damaged flooring throughout the space, as well as walls, drywall, insulation, trim, doors and baseboards.

The flood also damaged dog living areas, supplies, the laundry area, a dryer used to wash bedding and towels daily, and storage, equipment and other items used to care for the dogs.

"This wasn't just damage to a house," the fundraiser description notes. "It was damage to the home of 13 senior dogs who rely on us every day."

Severe storms and heavy rain moved through the area on Tuesday. Stamford received nearly 5 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service, and flooding was prevalent throughout parts of the city.

Special Needs Senior Dog Sanctuary was founded by Todd and Anna Giorgi 14 years ago. Along with their two children, the family gives abandoned, neglected and senior dogs the love and home they deserve.

Since 2012, the nonprofit says it has rescued 44 senior dogs with special needs.

According to the fundraiser, donations will be used to restore the sanctuary, including water damage remediation, replacement of drywall, insulation and flooring, electrical repairs, new commercial laundry equipment, restoration of the dogs' living spaces, and replacement of damaged supplies and equipment.

"For 14 years, we've said 'yes' to the dogs no one else wanted," the fundraiser description says. "Today, we're asking for help so we can continue saying 'yes.'"
