STAMFORD, CT — According to the latest update from the Connecticut Department of Transportation on Thursday night, two additional areas appear to have a similar construction as the ceiling that collapsed at the Stamford Train Station on May 31.

"There is no visible cracking or immediate danger in those areas, but out of an abundance of caution, CTDOT will remove these ceilings," said CTDOT spokesperson Shannon Burnham in an emailed statement. "We are developing plans for removing the ceilings so we may begin construction within the next two weeks, in addition to developing plans for permanently replacing the ceilings and lighting."

An investigation into what caused the collapse also remains ongoing. The train station is property of the state.

Burnham said it was a portion of the ceiling liner that collapsed in one of the tunnel stairwells at the station. Crews are constructing a temporary protective platform and temporary light fixtures in the area in anticipation of safely reopening the tunnel for use during its ceiling replacement.

"Although the tunnel will remain closed until next week pending a review by CTDOT engineers and code officials, CTDOT will continue to maintain ADA access throughout the station," Burnham said via email.

During construction, prominent signage will be installed to guide the public to their destinations, Burnham noted. Station platforms remain accessible in all areas, and the construction will not impact train services.

Station Place was closed for several hours following the partial collapse on Wednesday. Train service was not interrupted.
