STAMFORD, CT — Mackenzie's Bar & Grill, the popular Stamford Pub located at 970 High Ridge Road, will be closing its doors on Wednesday, according to an announcement on their Facebook page. But the announcement expressed hope that others can continue the business at some point in the future.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share with you that the current era of Mackenzie’s will be coming to an end on Wednesday, November 24th," the announcement said. "For the past 15 years we have had the pleasure of being not only your ‘go to’ neighborhood bar and restaurant, but also your place to share memories and friendships with those you care about the most."

Mackenzie's opened in 2007, and quickly became a popular destination for people looking to grab a cold drink and some wings, or meet with friends and family for steaks, sandwiches or burgers. The establishment was named "Best Pub" in Stamford earlier this year in Stamford Magazine.

"Even though we are very saddened by this decision, we are embracing a glimmer of hope because there are a few operators that have showed an interest in leasing the space and possibly continuing on with the Mackenzie’s name and spirit," the announcement continued.

The Stamford Advocate reported that the business decided to close following the death of owner Andrew Whittingham, who had cancer, earlier this year. That, plus the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, led to the decision from Whittingham's wife, Robyn, and her son.

The Advocate also reported that a few of the 13 employees at Mackenzie's are working with the landlord to take ownership of the restaurant so they can open it back up in the future. Whittingham said things are "moving slowly."

However, Mackenzie's urged patrons to come in one final time to say goodbye before the end of day Wednesday. They noted in their announcement that they will keep their website and social media accounts alive to let people know future plans.

Underneath the Facebook post, there were scores of comments from people who were saddened by the announcement.

"Sad news. We've been going to Mackenzie's for years. Fantastic staff and great food. Nothing like it on this end of town. Sorry to see you go," said one woman.
