STAMFORD, CT — A 31-year-old man was seriously injured when the food truck he was working underneath collapsed and crushed him, according to the Stamford Police Department.

First responders were called to a home on West Avenue around 7 p.m. Tuesday night where they found a man trapped underneath a Chevrolet dual-wheel food truck, Assistant Stamford Police Chief Richard Conklin said. Arriving units immediately performed CPR.

"The party survived and is hospitalized at this point in grave condition," Conklin said.

Conklin said the man was working on the truck in the backyard and trying to drop the transmission from the vehicle.

"He was working by himself, and he had the vehicle jacked up and unfortunately the vehicle fell on top of him," Conklin said. "He had had some conversations with a friend, and there was about a 20 minute lapse from when he was last heard from. [The friend] came back to the scene where they saw he was pinned under the vehicle."

Conklin warned residents about working on heavy equipment without proper supervision or safety measures in place.

"We just really want to let the public know how dangerous it is to work under a vehicle like this if it's not professionally secured when it's jacked up in that position," Conklin said.

The food truck was towed to police headquarters as part of an ongoing investigation.
