Former HS Football Player Shot And Killed In Stamford

Stamford police have released the ID of the victim, the city's first homicide in a year and a half.

STAMFORD, CT — An 18-year-old former co-captain of the Stamford High School Black Knights football team was shot and killed in Stamford Thursday night on West Avenue on the city's West Side, writes the Stamford Advocate.

Antonio Robinson, a free safety on the 2016-17 team, was shot and killed at about 9 p.m. near the I-95 overpass by the intersection of West and Baxter avenues.

Details of the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately available. Until Thursday, Stamford had not had a homicide since the fall of 2016 when Elmer Gomez Ruano allegedly killed his estranged wife, Dionicia Bautista-Cano.

Stamford Mayor David Martin issued the following statement on the city's website early Friday afternoon about the fatal shooting:

“We often take for granted how safe our community has become, but the homicide that occurred yesterday serves as a sad reminder that gun violence can occur anywhere. It is particularly heartbreaking and disturbing to see a youth in Stamford whose life ends far too soon because of a gun.
It is ironic that today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Yet almost daily we hear and read stories from around the county of shootings.
While our police department is one of the best in the nation, we must recognize the importance of a community-wide approach to public safety. We must all do our job to keep our city and children safe.
This incident continues to be investigated by the Stamford Police Department. I know they will do everything possible to bring justice for the young man’s family and loved ones.”
